A Quarter Century
of Stables
The formal Stable’s story began in 1986 in Lajitas, Texas, when owner Linda
Walker opened the area’s first Trail Riding Outfit outside of the Big Bend
National Park; the Lajitas Stables. The name came from the historic
river crossing and Trading Post of Lajitas, Texas, along the Rio Grande.
Developers were creating a new destination for the Big Bend travelers and
the Lajitas Stables would offer one of the first recreations to visiting
tourists. Linda’s previous experience in ranching and pack trips well equipped
her to start up this quarter of a century endeavor that still hosts thousands
of visitors each year in Texas, New Mexico and Old Mexico....... Click

A String of Stables
Our Big Bend Stables is best described as the ‘Family’ Stables. Of
course riders of all ages join us at this location, right outside the western
entrance to Big Bend National Park, just south of the junction of TX 118
and FM 170. This ‘Headquarters’ is open all year long for Hourly,
½ Days with Lunch and Sunset Rides.
Our Lajitas Stables, the grandfather of the operations, is the gateway
to Outfitted Horseback Riding within Big Bend Ranch State Park and Old
Mexico. This location, along the scenic Camino del Rio, FM 170, just
west of the resort town of Lajitas, offers up more challenging riding and
climbs way up out of the Rio Grande River corridor for spectacular views
into Old Mexico to the south, the Bofecillos Mountain range to the northwest
and the ancient Ouachita Mountains (Solitario) to the north. Open
anytime of the year for Hourly, ½ Days with Lunch and Full Day Rides,
as well as Multi-day rides, Specialty Rides and Saddle/Paddle Combo Trips.
Our Rio Grande Stables, based in the Taos Ski Valley during the summer
months, originated about 1990. Our name represents the upper reaches
of the Rio Grande River that connects the far distances between our stables.
Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Rio Grande Stables offers cool mountain
trails through pines and aspens at breath-taking elevations and all with
spectacular views! Hourly, ½ Days with Lunch and Full Day Rides
are available.
